October 1-7 declared Older Persons’ Week

Davao City (1 October) — The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in coordination with the Regional Interagency Committee on Older Persons (RIACOP) and the Regional Interagency Coordinating and Monitoring Board (RIACMB) will spearhead the regional observance of the Elderly Filipino Week from October 1-7.

DSWD focal person on older persons Lorela M. Ramos said the annual celebration will be highlighted with a Regional Consultation on RA 9994 or the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010.

“We are conducting the forum on October 1 at SM Event Centre from 10 in the morning until 5 p.m. to be able to thoroughly discuss the new law for the best interest of our elderly population especially those in the disadvantaged group,” Ramos explained.

Among the topics in the forum are RA 9994 and Its Implementing Rules and Regulations, Internal Revenue Guidelines on RA 9994, and Standards on Accreditation of Senior Citizens Day Center.

Expected to attend are provincial, city and municipal social welfare and development officers; heads of the local offices of Senior Citizens’ Affairs (OSCA); and presidents of the Municipal Senior Citizens Federation from all over the region, Ramos said. Resource persons will come from the offices of DTI, DILG, DOH, DOJ and BIR, she said.

Meanwhile, SM City Davao has organized a “Walk For Life” which will be conducted at the mall before the forum and participated by the forum participants. An information booth on RA 9994 and on other concerns regarding older persons will also be set up at SM from October 1-7.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Nakatatanda: Tanglaw ng Bayan, Kaagapay sa Matuwid Na Daan.” Other activities lined up for the month are Provincial and Municipal Orientations on RA 9994 and other advocacy undertakings like Radio Guesting and utilization of social media, Ramos added.
