(This is the fourth in a series of articles celebrating Pozorrubio’s writers. The piece below, ‘The Etiology of a Community Malady’, won the Special Award in the 1st Pozorrubio Essay/Expository Writing Contest. It was written by Dr. Francisco Raul D. Salvador, submitted under the pen name of ‘Rod Avlas’.
Dr. Francisco Raul D. Salvador, a true blooded Pozorrubian, is the youngest son of Francisco Salvador and Teofila Doras of Bobonan, a barangay north of the town. He is a medical specialist practitioner of family and community medicine, a professor of La Consolacion College, a former medical coordinator volunteer of Medecins Sans Frontiers, Switzerland section. He was a pioneering community and occupational health officer in Georgetown, British Guyana, South America.
He obtained his medical doctor degree at the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center- College of Medicine. He trained in Family and community medicine at the University of the Philippines- Philippine General Hospital and Medical Center. Prior to his training he was the occupational health practitioner of Northern Cement Corporation. and he was a past president of the Pozorrubio Jaycees. He is active in community service that includes participation in medical mission conducted by La Consolacion College, AFP- Reserve Command, SSS, ABS-CBN DZMM, and the Philippine Academy of the Medical Specialist. He was a past president of the Pozorrubio Jaycees. Aside from his professional life he loves to play tennis and strums reggae beat.
Dr. Salvador is the husband of Dra. Blesilda dela Rosa-Salvador, the first place awardee in this contest, and the father of 3 children active in community service.
Dr. Salvador received the award handed over to him by guest speaker in the Awarding in Ceremony, Hon. Mayor Emma T. Chan (Municipal Mayor of Pozorrubio) and Engr. Gin.Quesada (head of the sponsoring organizations) assisted by the Board of Directors of the said organizations. The awarding ceremony was held at the Function Hall of Pozorrubio Executive Building, Pozorrubio, Pangasinan last January 14, 2010, an event forming part of the town fiesta and founding anniversary celebrations.

The problem and the challenge:
The malady of today’s society is man’s insensitivity, callousness and indifference to the welfare of the less fortunate and the marginalized people. There is a big discrepancy on wealth among the population where in the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. The poorest among the poor suffers most in time of disasters and calamities and even in normal times.
