In offering a prayer for the late former President Cory Aquino, who died last August 1, 2009, Mayor Emma Zosima T. Chan, delivered on Monday’s flag ceremony, the following message:
“Today, the Pozorrubians join the country in mourning for the former President Corazon C. Aquino. She died last Saturday, August 1, just 20 days before the death anniversary of her husband, Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino.
For the rest of the week until next Monday, let us offer a prayer each day for President Cory and her family. For the same length of time, the flag remains at half-mast to honor a most special icon who leaves us with a most special legacy – the return of democracy.
It is very rare that both husband and wife shall be remembered and enshrined in history for dedicating their lives to the Filipino people. Ninoy returned to the Philippines despite threats to his life, believing that “the Filipino people is worth dying for”. Cory lived what is left of the rest of her life without Ninoy by her side, believing that the Filipino people is worth living for. She united us all, one will and one spirit, that freedom may be ours again. And she made sure that freedom is still ours to this day.
This woman, this wife, this mother taught us what every woman, wife and mother should teach to all their children – that it is in the heart that all things begin. She showed us that a housewife could be so brave as to change the course of history.
Thank you, Cory.”
