For Mother Earth, for Pozorrubio; and of course, for ourselves

LAST Saturday, the 2nd day of the simmering summer month of May, was the day after Labor Day. It was also the 2nd day of a long 3-day no-work weekend. Everyone, with no exemption, would have preferred not to be up and about stretching muscles and inviting heatstroke. It was a day of rest and, supposedly, the only game around town was playing hide-and-hide from the scorching sun.
LAST Saturday, the 2nd day of the simmering summer month of May, was the day after Labor Day. It was also the 2nd day of a long 3-day no-work weekend. Everyone would have preferred not to be up and about stretching muscles and inviting heatstroke. It was a day of rest and, supposedly, the only game around town was playing hide-and-hide from the scorching sun.

Not so with this particular working army – of barangay captains, council kagawads and tanods, senior citizens, barangay health workers, KALIPI women, pastors and members of different churches and other non-government organizations. Of local municipal leaders, from the mayor and the vice-mayor and the Sangguniang Bayan councilors and their staff to the department heads and PWERSA, the municipal employees union, the water district office and the DepED family.

It was the first municipality-wide tree planting and clean-up drive activity simultaneously executed in the thirty-four (34) barangays of Pozorrubio as inspired by the town Mayor, Emma Zosima Chan. Done in one day; but not done-and-over-with after just a day. It shall be the first of the many tree-planting and clean-up drives.  For Mother Earth, for Pozorrubio. And of course, for all of us.

It was not of a 100-percent fool-proof attendance, but each volunteer came with ready and willing arms to dig holes for the tree seedlings, for cleaning out canals and riverbeds, for pulling out weeds and picking-up trash. Surely, what mattered was not the sight of the expected many, but the many unexpected results from the willing few. Soon, there will be more – more volunteers, more visible results.

Meanwhile, let the following pictures tell this news and its featured story.
